Trainee Development
Your induction will be one of the key starting points to your career at Brodies and will span a number of weeks. We prefer not to bamboozle you with endless training sessions and believe that our structured induction programme will provide you with a good balance of starting to work in your department as well as allowing you to pick up key information as you go along. The induction programme will include "lunch and learn" sessions with other departments, business development training, commercial awareness and time management sessions, giving you exposure to the whole firm from an early stage.
During your traineeship your legal knowledge will be increased by attending the Professional Competence Course (PCC). This is an essential part of your commitment to the Law Society. The PCC training consists of a number of core modules as well as elective modules. It is a skills based course which consolidates and builds on what trainees do in their traineeships.
During your three seats you will receive department specific training to ensure you have the right tools to take on a variety of responsibilities. This may include attending seminars with your colleagues, one to one training and picking up hints and tips at team meetings. You may even become involved in training one of your colleagues as you become more experienced.
We want you to take ownership of your career and set yourself challenging, specific objectives during each of your placements. You will attend quarterly reviews with your manager/partner which will give you an opportunity to discuss your performance against our trainee competency framework. The review will be a two way discussion in which you will receive feedback and will also have the opportunity to highlight your strengths as well as plans for the future.
It is important to self assess your progress during your traineeship and ask for feedback where necessary. This means that there will be no surprises when it comes to your quarterly reviews!
The Law Society plays a very important role during your traineeship and we will need to keep them updated on your progress throughout the course of the two years. As part of your quarterly reviews you will be responsible for ensuring the correct forms are completed and sent to the Law Society on time. You will also be required to complete a log book detailing the range of work you are exposed to. This helps you keep a track of the work and provides guidelines for the type of work you should be getting involved in for each seat.
